Your smoke alarm can’t call you. Your old phone can.
Earshot turns a spare iPhone into a listener for your home. When it hears the smoke alarm, the doorbell or the dog, everyone in your household gets an alert on their phone, wherever they are.
In testing on iPhone now. Android later.
How it works
Put the old phone where the sound happens
Near the kitchen for the smoke alarm, in the hall for the doorbell. Plugged in, on Wi-Fi, screen off.
Choose what it listens for
Pick a sound from the list or describe your own in a few words, and set how sensitive it is.
Get the alert, wherever you are
Everyone in your household gets it on their own phone within seconds. If the detector goes offline, you hear about that too.
Ten sounds to start with, or your own
Pick what matters in your home. Not on the list? Describe it in a few words and the detector listens for that too. Each sound has its own sensitivity, and a pause before it alerts again.
- Smoke alarm
- Doorbell
- Dog barking
- Baby crying
- Glass breaking
- Knocking
- Car alarm
- Cat meowing
- Running water
- Microwave beep
- Your own, in a few words
Audio never leaves the old phone
The detector listens and decides on the phone itself. No sound, recording, or anything made from it is ever uploaded. Our server only learns which sound was heard, when, and how sure the detector was, and keeps that for 30 days.
No ads. No tracking. No analytics, in the app or on this site.
An extra pair of ears, not a fire alarm
Earshot can miss a sound, and a phone can lose power or Wi-Fi. Keep your smoke alarms, and any monitored alarm service you have. Earshot only adds a way to hear about them when you’re not there.
Questions
Which phones work?
Any iPhone with iOS 15.1 or later, both as the detector and as the phone you get alerts on. The detector needs about 300 MB free for its sound model. Android is planned.
Does the old phone have to stay on?
Yes: plugged in, on Wi-Fi, with the Earshot Detector app open. The screen can be off. If the detector is offline for 10 minutes, Earshot tells you, so you never assume it is listening when it isn’t.
Can my family get the alerts too?
Yes. Invite them to your household and everyone gets every alert on their own phone, wherever they are.
Does it record what happens at home?
No. The detector decides on the phone itself whether it heard one of your sounds, and no audio ever leaves that phone. We only learn which sound was heard and when.
When can I try it?
